There Can Only Be One Tool

Let’s play a game! If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one thing, what would it be?

If it were me and I could only have one tool – obviously it would be my needle nose pliers! Yes, I know there are so many different tools out there that do amazing things. Why would I chose one of the most basic tools? Does that mean I’m “basic”? Nah…. But if I was polled among 100 craftspeople, I wouldn’t be shocked if there were many that chose an obscure tool that does crazy things – and I am definitely not saying that they are wrong. There are some pretty awesome tools out there.

For me though, I choose the tool that most Americans have in their home tool kit for 2 main reasons. 1 – It gets the job done. I am able to twist and wrap wire and I’m sure I could start getting in touch with my inner crazy craftiness on the deserted island and make cool imprints with the tip. 2 – It may be cliché, but I have a weird sentimental attachment to them. When I first started to learn how to make jewelry, my boss handed me just the needle nose pliers. “That is all you need”, she said to my very confused face. I was shocked at first, but she was right. That one tool helped me make my first pair of earrings. From there, I never looked back.

Something about using that one tool reminded of how beauty comes from the simple things. You can get caught up with all the new technology and tools that will make your art more intricate and enhance your product, but there is an art in the basics. I bought my first pair of needle nose pliers soon after her lesson and I still use them 10 years later. It is a constant reminder to keep life simple. Not your normal reminder… but really, who is normal?
